ἐγγύς [υ^], Adv., Comp. ἐγγυτέρω
A.-τέρῳHell.Oxy.6.3), also -ύτερον Pl.Lg.704e: Sup. ἐγγυτάτω or -ύτατα (first in Hp., and Att.); also ἔγγι_ον, ἔγγιστα (v. ἐγγίων).
I. of Place, near, nigh, at hand: freq. in Hom., “. γὰρ νυκτός τε καὶ ἤματός εἰσι κέλευθοιOd.10.86: c. gen., hard by, near to; so λύπας ἐγγυτέρω nearer to grief, S.OC1217: c. dat., Il.11.340, E.Heracl.37; ἐγγὺς ὁδῷ dub. in IG12.974: mostly with Verbs of rest, . ἑστάναι, παρεστάναι, A.Pers.686, Eu.65; but “. χωρεῖνId.Th.59: c. gen., “οἱ ἐγγυτάτω τῆς ἀγορᾶς κατεσκευασμένοιLys.24.20, etc.
II. of Time, nigh at hand, Il.22.453; “. ἡμῖν ἀγώνX.Cyr.2.3.2.
III. of Numbers, etc., nearly, “ἔτεσι . εἴκοσιTh.6.5; “μισθὸς . ἐνιαυτοῦX.HG3.1.28: generally, nearly, almost, “. ἔγνωςS.Ichn.301; οὐδ᾽ . τινος not nearly, i. e. not by a great deal, nothing like it, Pl.Smp.198b; ἔχει οὐχ οὕτω ταῦτα οὐδ᾽ . not so . . nor yet nearly so, D.21.30; “οὐκ ἐποίουν τοῦτο, οὐδ᾽ .Id.18.96; mostly, Hp.Mochl.34.
