ἀραῖος [α^], α, ον, also ος, ον S.Ant.867 (lyr.): (ἀρά):
I. Pass., prayed to or entreated, Ζεὺς ἀ., = ἱκέσιος, S.Ph.1182 (lyr.).
2. prayed against, accursed, “γονά” A.Ag.1565 (lyr.); “πότμος ἀ. ἐκ πατρός” Id.Th.898 (lyr.); μ᾽ ἀραῖον ἔλαβες you adjured me under a curse, S. OT276.
II. Act., cursing, bringing mischief upon, c. dat., “φθόγγος ἀ. οἴκοις” A.Ag.237 (lyr.); “δόμοις ἀ.” S.OT1291, cf. E.Med.608, IT 778; “ἀ. γονεὺς ἐκγόνοις ὡς οὐδεὶς ἕτερος ἄλλος” Pl.Lg.931c: abs., A. Ag.1398, S.Tr.1202.—Almost confined to Trag., exc. Pl.l.c.
