ἀπαμβλύνω [υ_], fut. -υ^νῶ (v. infr.),
A.blunt or dull the edge of, “τὰ ξίφη” D.C.40.24 (Pass.).
2. mostly metaph., “ἐλπίδα” Pi.P.1.82 (tm.); of a person, “τεθηγμένον τοί μ᾽ οὐκ ἀπαμβλυνεῖς λόγῳ” A.Th.715; “τὰ λευκὰ τῶν τριχῶν ἀπαμβλύνει τὸν νοῦν” Herod.1.67; “φάος ὄσσων” Opp.H.4.525; tone down, take the edge off a phrase, Plot.3.6.12:—more freq. in Pass., to be blunted, lose its edge or force, “ὥρη μὲν ἀπήμβλυνται, θυμὸς δὲ μενοινᾷ” Hom.Epigr.12, cf. S.Eleg.6; “γηράσκοντι συγγηράσκουσι αἱ φρένες καὶ ἐς τὰ πρήγματα πάντα ἀπαμβλύνονται” Hdt.3.134; “ἀπαμβλυνθήσεται γνώμην” A.Pr.866; “ἡμῖν -ύνεται ἡ δικαιοσύνη” is indistinctly seen, Pl.R.442d.
