ἀντικατ-αλλάσσομαι , Att. ἀντικάτ-ττομαι , Med.,
A.exchange one thing for another:
1. give one thing for another, “τὴν ἰδίαν ψυχὴν ἀντὶ τῆς κοινῆς σωτηρίας” Lycurg.88; “τὸ ζῆν ὑπὲρ ἄλλου οὐδενός” Isoc.5.135.
2. receive one thing in exchange for another, “τι ἀντί τινος” Id.6.109, Aeschin.3.92, D.Chr.40.30.
3. set off or balance one thing against another, “εὐεργεσίας κρίσεως” Din.1.14; ἀ. τι πρὸς τὴν περὶ τὰ θεῖα φιλοσοφίαν afford some compensation for . ., Arist.PA645a3; ἀ. ἀδικοῦντα, εἰ βλαβερόν, ἀλλὰ καλόν submit in justification a balance in case of injury . ., Id.Rh.1416a11.
4. interchange, Id.EN1157a12.
II. Pass., ἀντικαταλλαγῆναι (sc. τῆ τύχῃ) to be reconciled, Plb.15.20.5: abs., come to an agreement, “περὶ οὗ ἀντικατηλλάγη” PFlor.47.13.
III. Act., come to an agreement, ὁμολογῶμεν ἀντικατηλλαχέναι πρὸς ἀλλήγους ib.3(iii A. D.).
