A.lament, dirge, used by Trag. in lyr., A.Supp.115, E.Rh.895, Tr.1304, Ph.1033, etc.; “τὸν ἰ. ἀρίστευσε” Theoc.15.98: rare in Prose, Metrod.Herc.831.17 (s.v.l.)<*> prov., ἰαλέμου ψυχρότερος, of something tedious and dull, Zen.4.39.
II. as Adj., melancholy, “γόοι” E.HF109(lyr., s.v.l.); but usu.,
2. tedious, dull, stupid, “ποιηταί” Luc.Pseudol.24; “ἰατροί” Gal. 14.617: as Subst., dullard, oaf, Men.236, Hermog.Id.2.6; title of play by Amphis, Ath.2.69b. (Perh. from the cry ἰή.)
