A.ruffling of a smooth surface.
I. ripple caused by a gust of wind sweeping over the smooth sea, “ὑπὸ φρικὸς ΒορέωIl.23.692; μελαίνῃ φρικὶ καλυφθείς, of Proteus coming to the surface, Od.4.402; Ζεφύροιο ἐχεύατο πόντον ἔπι φρίξ ripple spread over the sea from the west wind, Il.7.63; “μαλακὴν φρῖκα φέροι ΖέφυροςAP7.668 (Leon.); θάλασσα φρικὶ χαρασσομένη ib.10.2 (Antip.Sid.), cf. 14 (Agath.).—Poet. word for Prose φρίκη.
II. bristling up, as of the hair, “κριὸς βαθείῃ φρικὶ μαλλὸν ὀρθώσαςBabr. 93.7.
2. shivering-fit, Hp.Morb.2.68, POxy.924.3 (iv A. D.); “φρὶξ ἐπέσχε νῶτα καὶ κνήμαςBabr.95.59.
